Facebook ad account restricted or disabled: what to do, in what order
Your Facebook ad account is restricted or disabled? The most common causes, how to request a review, and the mistakes that make everything worse.

One morning, the ads stop running and a banner says your ad account is restricted, or disabled. The enquiries stop with it. It is one of the most stressful moments for a business that depends on Meta, and also the moment people make the worst decisions.
First, know what is blocked
Meta can restrict several things, and the steps differ in each case:
- The ad account: you can no longer run ads from that account, but your page and profile work.
- Your personal profile: you can no longer advertise at all, on any account, while the restriction lasts.
- The business portfolio (Business Manager): every account inside it is affected.
- A single ad: it is rejected, the rest carries on. That is not an account restriction.
The place to check is Meta's "Account Quality" area. It shows what is restricted, why, and whether you can request a review.
The most common causes
A payment problem. A declined card, a limit reached, an unpaid balance. The simplest to fix: settle the balance or change the payment method, and delivery usually resumes once the payment goes through.
Repeatedly rejected ads. Every rejection counts. A series of ads that over-promise ("earn €500 a month", "guaranteed result"), that point at personal characteristics ("in debt?"), or that touch sensitive categories ends up flagging the account.
Activity that looks suspicious. A login from a new country, a sudden budget jump, a new payment method added the same day, access given to someone whose own account is flagged.
An identity check requested and not done. Meta sometimes asks the admin to confirm their identity. Until that is done, advertising stays blocked.
The steps, in order
- Open "Account Quality" and read exactly what is restricted and why.
- Fix what can be fixed right away: payment, identity check, two-factor authentication on admin profiles.
- Request a review when the button is offered. Describe the business plainly, without getting angry or making promises.
- Wait for the answer, without firing off five requests in parallel.
- Fix the rejected ads before relaunching anything, so the problem doesn't repeat.
What you must not do
Open a new account to get around it. It is the most common reflex, and the most dangerous. Meta treats circumventing a restriction as a violation in itself. A new account linked to the same people, card or website is often disabled in turn, and the penalty can become permanent.
Buy or rent an ad account. Same logic, plus the risk of trusting your business to an account whose history you don't know.
Change every setting at once. New card, new admin, new login from another device, all on the same day: that is exactly what looks suspicious.
Prevention beats cure
- Two admins on the business portfolio, each with two-factor authentication. If one profile is blocked, the other keeps control.
- An up-to-date payment method, with a backup card already saved.
- Ads that describe what you do rather than what the customer will "win". It is also what converts best over time.
- A partner who works on your account through partner access, not with your login details. That is how I work with my clients: the account stays yours, and nobody logs in as you from another country.
