Performance Max: what it is, and when to use it
Performance Max shows your ads across all of Google from a single campaign. How it works, what it hides, and which businesses it actually makes sense for.

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that shows your ads across all of Google's spaces from a single campaign: Search, YouTube, the Display network, Discover, Gmail and Maps. You supply the ingredients, Google decides where, when and to whom to show them.
What you supply
- A conversion goal. A quote request, a call, a purchase. That is what the campaign will try to multiply.
- Assets. Headlines, descriptions, images, videos, your logo. Google assembles them itself depending on where it shows the ad.
- Audience signals. Your customer lists, your site visitors, interests. They are starting hints, not limits: Google can go beyond them.
Everything else, bids, placements, who sees what, is automatic.
What it does well
Performance Max looks for conversions where a standard search campaign does not go: a video on YouTube, an ad in Gmail, a listing on Maps. For an online shop with a catalogue and plenty of sales to learn from, it often finds buyers you would not have targeted by hand.
What it hides
The price of that automation is visibility. You see less precisely which searches your ads showed on, and which space produced what. Google is gradually opening reports and settings that were missing at first, such as keyword exclusions, but it remains far from the control of a search campaign.
The concrete risk: a campaign showing good conversions because it mostly captured people already typing your name, who would have come anyway.
Who it makes sense for
It suits businesses with reliable conversion tracking and plenty of conversions. The algorithm learns from what you report: the more accurate signals it gets, the better it searches.
It suits less a tradesperson who gets a few enquiries a month. With little data, the campaign learns slowly, and you cannot see where the budget goes. A search campaign on a handful of precise keywords, with an up-to-date negative keyword list, is often more profitable at first.
Three settings that change everything
- Measure the right conversion. If the campaign optimises for clicks to the contact page rather than enquiries sent, it learns the wrong thing.
- Exclude your own brand name where possible. So the campaign is judged on new customers, not on those already looking for you.
- Take care of the assets. Google assembles what you give it. Weak videos and images make weak ads, everywhere at once.
This is where my editing work helps on the Google side too: the videos I produce for Meta feed YouTube and Performance Max campaigns.
