Finding renovation work without going through lead-selling platforms

What resold leads really cost renovation firms, and how to build an acquisition channel that belongs to you, not to a platform.

Lead-selling platforms have one merit: they give you volume quickly, without building anything. That is why they are the first reflex when the order book empties.

The problem shows up later, and it is structural.

What actually costs you

The same contact is sold several times. You buy an enquiry that three or four other firms bought at the same moment. The homeowner gets four calls within the hour, compares four quotes, and the conversation turns on price.

You decide nothing. Not the area, not the type of job, not the volume. The rules, the rates and the ranking change without you.

You build no equity. After two years on a platform you have built no reputation of your own. The day you stop, your flow stops the same day.

You are compared before you exist. The homeowner discovers you as one line among others, not as a firm they chose.

None of that is fatal if platforms are a supplement. It becomes fatal when they are your only source.

What changes with a channel of your own

When someone finds you through an ad showing your sites and your team, three things change.

They know you before they call. They have seen your face, heard your voice, watched a job sped up. The conversation does not start from zero.

They do not compare you immediately. They made a move towards you, rather than answering a generic form.

And you keep the asset. Your videos, your audiences, your visitors, your contact base. It builds slowly and it stays.

What it takes to hold up

Let us be honest about the effort. This is not easier than a platform, it is more profitable in the long run.

Footage of your jobs. No equipment needed: a recent phone, filmed horizontally or vertically depending on the use, in decent light. Three minutes per job is enough if it is done regularly.

Your face somewhere. A video where you explain a step, a technical choice, a common mistake. That is what sets you apart from the interchangeable ads in the trade.

A simple landing page. Your work, your area, a form that qualifies, a visible phone number. Not a ten-page brochure site.

Someone who calls back quickly. Same rule as everywhere: the first to call back gets the appointment.

Consistency. An advertising channel takes two to three months to settle. Switching it off after three weeks because the numbers look bad means paying for the learning and never collecting the benefit.

The calculation to run before deciding

Take your last twelve months on the platforms. How much did you spend in total, and how many jobs did you sign because of them? Divide.

You get your real acquisition cost per job. It is the only number that lets you compare the two approaches honestly, and it is often higher than people think, because the leads bought get counted while the ones that went nowhere do not.

Against that, a channel of your own asks for an upfront investment — producing the videos, setting up tracking, the learning phase — then generally costs less per signed job, with contacts who are not comparing you to three competitors from the outset.

A gradual transition

There is no reason to stop everything overnight.

Keep the platforms while you build. Run a modest advertising budget alongside, measure your cost per signed job on each channel for three months, then move the budget to whichever wins.

That is less risky, and it gives you a comparison based on your own numbers rather than on promises.
